Digital Craftsmanship
Digital Craftsmanship was a course in year 2 semester 1 that taught me how to creatively explore using data and physical crafting methods. The purpose of the course was to create a bag inspired by the workshops given in class, which showcased data-based and physical making based techniques that could be applied. Our final work was a shape-changing bag that represents the wearer's emotions which is fabricated using 3d printing methods of applying plastic on a fabric to change its bending properties, thus making the bag behave differently depending on what shape is printed.
What I learned the most from this course is that some designs are purely for the purpose of being stepping stones to the next designs, and that trying wildly unique things can lead to very realistic and good ideas in the end. I also learned creative applications of 3d-printing and learned how to sew both by hand and using a machine. Learning these new skills opened me up to learning more fabrication techniques and being more curious in materials, which is something I'm taking with me.
