Past & Present

Year 1

Looking back at where I left of in year 1, I was experimenting with a lot of things at the same time whilst not yet understanding or having a grasp at any specific subject or domain. I mainly explored MDC through courses like Creative Programming and Data Analytics, because I was quite fluent understanding digital and coding concepts. I did already gain a preference for certain Expertise Areas in year 1 as well as a result. In PDP 1.2 I focused mainly on TR, MDC and CA, mostly aligning with my Project-2 as this is what I was interested in through personal projects, but also what I learned and sank a lot of time in through the previously mentioned courses. I deliberately avoided US after not really liking the expertise area after Human Centered Design. BE was not on my radar either as I saw entrepreneurship as something that does not fit my personal motivations at that time. I closed off year 1 wanting to do more physical prototyping, and being more involved in the making of things, which I already got a taste of through sessions in Project-2 where I was busy with the aesthetics and quality of the robot we built, like sowing and combining colors and materials, and matching posters and digital work to go with this at demo day.

Year 2

Wanting to change into being a more physical and materials-oriented designer in year 2 as described in my PDP 2.1. I joined the SeMa squad and handed in my Squad Motivation SeMa. I also took the course Digital Craftsmanship as I was interested in the intertwined collaboration of digital and physical tools to create or prototype something new. Aesthetics of Interaction was a course I also took this semester which helped me develop more skills in prototyping and taking studio-quality photos of my designs. It also helped me develop how to use photography as a useful skill in my design work. I would like to use this skill further in my developments in year 3 and masters. Another course this semester that has helped me develop a lot is the course Futures Thinking. Through this course I learned to work on questions relevant to the present and future of the real-world design beyond academia. I gained an affinity for physically laid out work because of this course, as all the work, such as the 4 visions of the future we did, were printed out and put into physical context. Later this year I would gain even more liking for this "putting into context" rather than pure digital work.

In semester 2 of year 2 I wrote my PDP 2.2. It is the most up-to-date version and dives into a lot of detail and examples. I also started to focus more on sustainability through Design & Sustainability and Design for Post-Growth Living, and especially how I could integrate it with my interest in material design, leading me to want to focus on bio-materials and local materials in preparation for my FBP.

Collaboration

Year 2 in particular I was more open to different team dynamics and contexts of working together compared to year 1.
