PDP 2
Vision
My vision for the future is not bound by ideals. The world is a constantly shifting place of prominent ideas that clash with, and react to one another. No one idea is inherently better than the other.
-
Balance is key to design. It is a principle that is reflected in the natural world, from the homeostasis in our bodies to the equilibria of animal populations, it is the ideal state of functioning.
-
Balance is dynamic. Balance is dependent on so many constantly changing factors that there is no true point of balance. Every time it is reached it will inevitably change.
-
Harmony is the ideal connection between objects and people. Symbiosis in nature, or how computer systems seamlessly integrate various components together into a network, harmony is woven into the fabric of good and balanced design. It is the smooth interaction between form and function.
-
Material awareness is leading. Materials are finite and costly, they come with economic, ecological but also ethical costs. Considering what materials are used influence not only the aesthetic and functional part, but also ensure that the design is economically, socially, and ecologically sustainable in an ethical and responsible manner.
Professional identity
Skills I have
- Half a decade of improving as a digital artist
- People-oriented team leader
- Critical thinker
- Perfectionist
- Hobbyist learner
I am an open-minded yet critical person. I hate taking information at face-value and I spend a lot of time trying to understand the deeper sentiment behind things. I put meticulous care into the things I work on, and settling for less is something I find hard to do. Learning new skills and spending time to master them is something that defines me as a person.
Goals
Short-term (1-2 years)
- Becoming fluent in design software and hardware
- Understanding my personal motives in design
- Broadening my understanding and professional vocabulary in ID
- Study philosophical works that match or challenge my designing vision
- Learn videography as a way of documenting
- Get in touch and inspired by designing masters
Mid-term (bachelor-masters)
- Carving my own design processes and structures
- Visit different cultures and acquire design inspiration from other professionals
- Use documenting skills like videography at a professional level
Long-term (post-study)
- Refine and master my own design processes
- Acquire, reflect, and use experiences in design process efficiently
- Teach other people about my experiences
Inspiration
This part is a collection of inspiration for me which I plan on developing further:
Role models and inspiring masters
- Kisho Kurokawa
- Dieter Roms
- Antoni Gaudí
- John Mauriello
Inspiring works
- The Design of Everyday Things - Don Norman
- Zhuangzi
Inspiring philosophies
- Taoism
- Feng shui
- Confucianism
- Metabolism movement
Timeline
2024: Q1
-
SEP 16 First layout/draft was created outlining my basic aspirations
-
SEP 17 First mentor meeting: familiarizing myself with PI&V terminology, getting first ideas for what my vision and identity is.
-
SEP 20 The first formal version of the PDP document has been made, after thinking for days about what drives me as a designer I finally wrote down something that excites me and pushes me to become better and continue.
Feedback
Feedback was given by my student mentor
I really like the personal visual touch you put into the design of the document! (also don't forget to reference the photos you use (even if it is yours))
Vision
I like the style in which you wrote it, it makes it nice to read. What I have to say is that there is a lot of buildup (which I like) but there is no resolution. So basically you make a lot of statements but you do not make the connection to you personally not to each of the points. I would keep the format since it is unique but try to summarize it at the end and make the connection between all the points since now it feels like all of the points are separate. Also try to reflect on how you would reach those points? What behavior change is needed from people in order to reach that.
Professional Identity
I like the bullet-points and the statement paragraph. I would try to also connect it to your current designs to your past experiences and make the "why" of each of the points obvious. Why do you think you don't take information for granted? What unique attributes does that give you?
And I would refrain from using negative words like "hate".
Goals
I like the fact that you also think in the future and after the study ends. For the short-term goals it is important to connect them to Expertise Areas and to be as precise as you can since these will be used as assessment at the end of the year and it will also make it much easier when making the portfolio to reflect on these goals specifically.
