Career Day 2025

During Career Day, on the 19th of March I visited three uniquely different design studios. Falkland Studio, We Are Social Rebels, and Fashion Tech Farm.

My day started off by visiting Falkland Studio, where we got a presentation on what the studio is about. In particular I found it interesting to know that the studio is a collection of individuals that each work on their own thing outside of the studio, but also design within the studio as a sort of collection or workshop. Personally I would really like to work in a studio setting like that in the future and it gave me inspiration to continue on that path.

We Are Social Rebels is a group of designers that from my perspective make designs for and with society. Highly niche, local, and integrated work that takes into consideration vulnerable people, very much in line with the expertise area of User & Society. It was interesting to see a completely different perspective on design, especially compared to the previous studio.

Fashion Tech Studio felt more like an incubator or creative space for designers to grow and hone their skills beyond education. There was a lot of varied projects being worked on by different people. I saw wool being used as plant pots, electronics integrated into clothing, fashion made from recycled textiles in Africa, and a designer modifying g-code to print clay in unexpected ways. What impacted me the most was a talk I had with one of the designers about who you design for. A piece of advice I got told is to try and design from the point of personal challenges or issues, and try to solve them.

Solving my own problems through design, and sharing the solution.
