Future

My first year at Industrial Design has mostly been spent exploring and understanding what direction I want to move in as a designer. In my present reflection, I touched upon the different media and techniques I explored within the different expertise areas. This is something I want to continue doing, as I always feel open to explore more niche and unusual media and application of techniques which lead to innovation. Key part for me in this aspect is to always be open to try new things when they come, such as a ceramics workshop by a friend, visiting design expositions such as DDW, and being open to collaborate with either students or designers in the field.

Even more important in this aspect is to have a rigorous documentation process, which is why I am using Obsidian and taking pictures using my digital camera. I want to continue working on my skills in documentation by applying the methods I have learned and continue sharpening them through iteration. Methods include photography, sketching/drawing, and using Obsidian to link together reflections to discover new insights.

Next to being open for new experiences, I want to find a skillset or topic to dive deep on and become an expert in. I want to continue doing photography to refine my skills, and eventually plan to take up commissions to showcase my professional skill in that medium. Next to that I am also actively considering joining either the Sensory Matters or the Crafting Wearable Senses squad to gain very specialized knowledge in one topic which motivates me as a designer. As soon as I enter year 2 I plan on doing the workshop in the Wearable Senses lab to be allowed to enter and work on projects. Leading up to that point I have asked for material which could help me orient myself in topics regarding soft materials and textiles to already start learning.

After Q4 I want to do a rigorous reorganization of my Obsidian notes, write a PDP for year 2 including the above points, and finish my reflection on what I've learned during the second semester of year 1.

Read more about my goals, formulation of them, and development of PI&V in my PDP 3.
